Puppy dog training is crucial since it is the foundation for your pet's life as an adult dog, and proper training will help you overcome many potential problems in the future. This is the most important period, where the dog's character, habits, and temperament are formed and where you will have to do most of the work. English Bulldog Puppies | Information about British Bulldogs

The breed, commonly known as the English or British Bulldog, dates back more than 2,000 years and was created in the British Isles by breeding of the indigenous mastiffs to the newly arrived ones.

The Bulldog was originally used for farm work and guarding. It was later used in a blood sport of bull baiting (fighting bulls in a ring), until the activity was outlawed in the middle of the 19th century.

In those days, Bulldogs were taller and more athletic than they are today.

After bull baiting was outlawed, the English Bulldog as we know it today was developed by making the original breed more gentle and compact.

The original Bulldog looked more like the modern American Bulldog than the modern British Bulldog. Another variation of the breed, the miniature bulldog, is called the French Bulldog.

Several breeds, including the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Bull Terrier owe their existence to the English Bulldog.

This is a medium-size dog with a thick and massive body.

It has a large and square head with a short face and a flat forehead. The muzzle is short and faces upward. The eyes are dark, the nose is black, and the ears are small. The jaws are massive, with the lower jaw undershot.

The tail is naturally short and can be straight or screw. The chest is very broad and deep. The legs are stocky and are set at each corner of a Bulldog's body.

English Bulldog's skin is soft and loose, especially around the head area. The coat is short and comes in white, red, brindle, yellow or fawn.

The breed has a tendency for snorting, drooling and flatulence.

The English Bulldog is a very gentle and affectionate dog that gets along well with almost everyone, including other dogs, pets, and children. It loves human attention and being involved in family activities.

It's one of the gentlest dogs around. But don't be fooled -- it's very courageous and has excellent guarding abilities.

Young Bulldogs are full of energy and quite active. They slow down as they grow older.

Bulldogs are easily trainable but occasionally willful.

This is not a very active dog and will adapt to an apartment lifestyle quite well. If you are a couch potato, this may be a perfect breed for you!

But just because it's not very active, it does not mean your pet will not crave for your attention. These dogs LOVE human attention and are very persistent, so expect to spend some time playing with your pet.

Some English Bulldog breeders will interview prospective owners to make sure this is the right breed for them.

I already mentioned on several occasion that this is not a very active breed. Still, it requires some exercise.

At a minimum, take your pet for one or two walks every day.

These dogs are average shedders and are easy to care for.

Brush once or twice a week with a firm bristle brush. Bathe only when absolutely necessary.

To avoid infections, clean face folds daily.

Like all dog breeds, the English Bulldog is susceptible to complications caused by parasites such as dog ticks, fleas, and puppy worms, including tapeworms, roundworms, and heartworms.

Dogs can pick up fear or discomfort with storms from their family pack members, so it is important that you develop a calm, matter-of-fact attitude. Let your dog stay close and try to distract him with activities like play or brushing. Do not try to reassure him in a sympathetic voice—this will sound like praise and may increase his nervousness and confusion.
Some dogs become destructive when frightened. A crate is always the best way to keep your dog safe and your belongings intact. If you don’t use a crate, remove any items in the room your dog could destroy or could hurt him if he chewed them.
During a storm, keep windows and curtains closed to reduce noise and bright flashes. Turn on a TV or radio playing soft music at normal volume to distract your dog and help him to relax.
Keep your dog away from doors that lead outside. Your dog may be under significant stress, which could result in unnecessary injury to others entering your home or cause him to dart outside and get lost or injured.
Your dog may become incontinent due to his extreme fear and the rush of adrenaline he experiences during a storm. Be prepared for this, and don’t react if it occurs.
Dogs that continue to panic in thunderstorms may have to be reconditioned by creating an artificial storm with environmental recordings. Saluki Puppies | Facts about Persian Greyhounds

Did you just bring home a new Saluki puppy and want to learn more about the breed?

How old is this breed? The breed, also known as the Gazelle Hound, Royal Dog of Egypt, and Persian Greyhound, belongs to the oldest group of domesticated dogs -- the sighthounds. From this group, this is probably the oldest breed.

While some members of the sighthound group, such as the Afghan Hound, existed about 4,000 years ago, they didn't exist as a distinct breeds.

The Saluki, on the other hand, is identified by some historians as a distinct breed that existed as long as 2,400 years ago. And drawings of dogs resembling this breed were discovered on Egyptian tombs dating back to around 2,100 B.C. If that's not old enough, 8,000 year old images of dogs resembling this breed were discovered during excavations of Sumerian empire.

The breed was held in high regard in Egypt where many dogs were mummified and buried with Pharaohs. That practice gave rise to the name "Royal Dog of Egypt". Even in a Muslim culture where dogs were considered as "unclean", these dogs were allowed to sleep in tents with their owners.

The original Saluki habitat comprised the region between the Caspian Sea and the Sahara desert. There were variations in dogs living in different parts of that region, but they were very insignificant, mostly the size and color.

While this is not the fastest of the sighthound breeds, it still possesses great speed and endurance. As a matter of fact, no other sighthound can run for as long as the Saluki. The breed was used by Arabs to hunt gazelle. Often, the dogs hunted in tandem with specially trained falcons that were used to locate the prey.

The breed was first introduced into England around 1840 and was known as the Persian Greyhound. It wasn't until early 1920s that Saluki was bought to United States and 1927 when it was officially recognized by AKC as a distinct breed.

Don't let its fragile appearance fool you! The Saluki is an efficient hunter with strength, speed, and endurance to chase its prey over long distance.

This is a tall dog with a graceful, well-muscled body, deep but narrow chest, and long and well-muscled neck. The long tail is feathered, curved, and is a very important part of body. Just like cheetahs, Salukis use their tails as a rudder to steer, which gives them an added advantage over their prey.

The head is long and narrow, with black or liver nose, and large dark eyes. The ears are long and covered with long, silky hair.

The front legs are straight and long while the back legs are moderately bent. The feet are of moderate length, with thick hair between the toes for protection against rough terrain.

There are two varieties of Salukis -- coated or longhaired (feathering on all legs) and smooth (legs are covered with smooth short hair).

The hair is smooth, with silky texture, and can be white, red, fawn, cream, golden, black and tan, grizzle and tan, and tricolor (white, black and tan).

The Saluqi is a typical sighthound -- intelligent but independent, requires patience when training for obedience, and loves to chase things that run away from it.

It's gentle, but not cuddly. It will protect its family and unlike some other members of the sighthound group, it can make a good watchdog.

Salukis are outgoing with their own family but reserved and sometimes even shy with strangers. They are loyal, often get attached to one family member, and good with children as long as there is no roughhousing involved.

They get along well with other Salukis and sighthound breeds but don't have much tolerance for other dog breeds, especially smaller ones.

Be careful if you have other pets living in the house. A properly socialized Saluki will probably be OK with a family cat, but how well they get along will also depend on cat's personality. There is better chance they could co-exist if a cat can establish his dominance over the dog.

Like other independent-minded and sensitive breeds, it does not respond well to harsh treatment, including shouting and punishment. For best results, train in a calm and consistent way and include positive reinforcement and rewards as part of your training.

The breed gets bored quite fast so avoid boring and repetitive training sessions.

When losing sight of its prey, while running, the Saluki can jump up with all four feet at once in an effort to locate the prey. The jump can be as high as 7 feet.

The breed requires an active and patient family, preferably with older children.  

While it's not active indoors, it's still not recommended for an apartment lifestyle. It will do best in the suburbs, living on a large, fenced property.

It prefers living in a warm climate and is not suited to live outdoors.

While it's pretty inactive indoors, the Saluki is a very active breed and needs plenty of exercise.

The best exercise you can give your pet is to let him run off leash. Unfortunately, too many Salukis are lost or killed when they spot a small animal and run after it. Only allow your pet to run free in a protected, fenced area.

You can also take your pet along if you are into jogging or bicycle riding, but always on leash.

At a minimum, take your pet for several long walks every day.

The Saluki is an extremely clean dog, has little body odor, and is an average shedder.

Brushing and combing (especially the longer-haired parts of the body) several times per week is all it takes to maintain this dog. Bathe when necessary.

Like all dog breeds, Salukis are susceptible to complications caused by internal and external parasites such as ticks, fleas, and worms.

Symptoms of Worms in Dogs | How to Get Rid of Worms in Puppies

It's important you learn about causes of worms in dogs to protect your pet from numerous diseases, and possibly even death.

You also need to know what the symptoms of dog worms are and how to get rid of them.

There are a lot of myths about dog worms. What you will find here is information that I hope will dispel some of the myths about worms in puppies.

But if you suspect your puppy or adult dog has worms, talk to your veterinarian. He or she will determine the best treatment for your pet.

Virtually all puppies are born with worms. Even if your puppy was born worm-free, he can still get infected quite easily.

How?

Mosquitoes often transmit Heartworms from dog to dog. The following video discusses heart worms in dogs...If you feed your dog an uncooked meat or fish, he can easily consume several varieties of intestinal worms. Worm eggs can survive for up to 5 or 7 years on the ground. Even a single sniff in the wrong spot can cause an infection.Finally, have you ever seen a dog eating feces? Aside from being disgusting to watch, this activity, especially if feces is from an infected dog, will almost always result in an infection.

Dog worms are responsible for so many health issues and exhibit so many symptoms that it's impossible to list them all. What I will try to do is to list the most common symptoms of worms in puppies.

The most common and easily observed symptom is a mouth odor, sometimes referred to as "puppy breath". This odor is a good indication of intestinal worms (another cause can be dental problems. Visit dog teeth cleaning for more information).  

Here are some other symptoms of worms in dogs…

Diarrhea Anemia Good appetite but the weight is going down Poor appetite Your dog sits and rubs his rear end along the ground White segments in dog feces (these could be segments of a tape worm)

If you recognize any of these symptoms in your dog, talk to your veterinarian. He or she will prescribe a de-worming treatment for your puppy.

After the initial treatment, you can keep your puppy worm-free with some medications that you can easily administer at home (more about medications a little later).

When you bring your puppy for an initial visit, a veterinarian will perform a stool analysis and if needed, provide a de-worming treatment. After an initial treatment, your vet may take more samples to see if an additional treatment is required.

For your part, follow these tips to keep your dog worm-free:

Don't feed your dog raw meats or fish (some dogs do love fish!)Keep your yard clean of dog feces (some dogs like to eat feces, which may contain worm eggs)When you take him for a walk, watch what he is sniffingKeep your dog's crate and sleeping area clean

The most effective medications for treatment of worms in dogs are sold by prescription only.

How to Evaluate Dog Breeders | Don't be Scammed by a Puppy Mill

Buying purebred puppies from dog breeders seems like the right thing to do. But there is more to it than meets the eye.

While there is nothing wrong with adopting a mutt, a lot of dog owners want to get a purebred puppy or dog.

Most of these owners buy their pets from breeders and pet stores. A smaller number of dog owners adopt from a shelter or a local rescue group.

Adopting an abandoned pet is a noble act but, sometimes, finding the breed you are interested in is next to impossible.

Buying from a pet shop is not advisable. You see, that cute little puppy on the other side of a glass partition could be a product of a puppy mill. While it's not that puppy's fault where he was born, you may end up with a puppy that's not as healthy and not as pure as a puppy you can buy from a breeder.

That leaves us with the last option –– buying from a dog breeder. But even this is not as simple as it seems because a lot of puppy mills masquerade as dog breeders.  And some breeders are not as ethical as others.

So, the trick is not only to buy your pet from a breeder but to buy it from a good breeder.

If you are not sure where to begin your search for a dog breeder, don't worry. There are plenty of people and organizations that will be more than happy to help you.

Who are they? Try some of your local veterinarians, groomers, and boarding kennels. Even your friends and neighbors who own the same breed as the one you are thinking about getting may be able to help you. You could also try the local kennel club.

After you narrowed down your search to several dog breeders, use the following checklist to evaluate them...

Never buy a puppy over the Internet. Meet the breeder before you buy. Avoid breeders who have a large number of dogs, especially if they live in outdoor kennels. This could be a commercial breeding operation, also known as a puppy mill, pretending to be a breeder.Good breeders keep their dogs in the home, not in outdoor kennels or runs. The breeder should be knowledgeable, and patiently answer all your questions, about the breed, including its temperament, potential health issues inherent to this particular breed, and the type of family it will do best with. Make sure a breeder you are considering buying from breeds not more than 2 breeds of dogs. A breeder should let you see the mother and the rest of the litter. All should look healthy and well taken care off. The puppies should be sociable and shouldn't appear to be afraid of the breeder.Good breeders care about their puppies and want to make sure they go to good homes. They will ask you to sign a contract specifying minimum requirements of how you will care for your new puppy. They will also require you to return the dog should you be unable to keep him for whatever reason. A breeder should encourage your whole family to participate in the puppy selection process.If a breeder is willing to let you take home a puppy that is under 8 weeks of age, look for another breeder. 8 weeks is a minimum age when a puppy should be separated from its mother. The actual age will depend on an individual puppy. A good breeder will provide references not only from his previous clients but also from his veterinarian.Responsible dog breeders feed their pets only high quality "premium" brand food.

You visited several dog breeders and found the one you feel comfortable buying from. Is there anything else you need to do?

By this time, you probably know a lot about the breed you want to buy. If that's not the case, try to learn as much as possible. There are plenty of resources on the Internet that provide breed specific information. I have a section on this site where I cover over 120 of the most popular dog breeds.

If you are still convinced that this is the right breed for you, here are some questions that will help you to get a better feel about the breeder you are thinking about buying from:

Ask how long they have been into breeding this particular breed - the longer, the better.Are they registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) or any other major Kennel Clubs in the world?Ask if they require that you spay or neuter your new puppy. Most dog breeders will either require or suggest that you do. Visit dog spaying and dog neutering to learn more about these procedures.Do they provide a written guarantee against hereditary defects? Do they have a return policy if things don't work out? Will they refund your money or let you pick another puppy? All reputable dog breeders will at least let you pick another puppy. Ask if the parents had been screened for genetic diseases associated with their breed. Have the puppies had their first round of vaccinations? Which ones?

How To Crate Train a Puppy - Dog Training Advice

To give your puppy the teaching he will need to develop into a beautiful and devoted dog is to understand how to crate train a puppy. Crate training is generally viewed as the most effective potty training approach for a puppy or dog, and by crate training your puppy at a young age you can eradicate many problems in the future.

There is some confusion about the origin of this breed. What is known is that the breed as we know it today was developed in the German town of Rottweil.

It's believed some of its ancestors were Mastiff-like dogs used by the Romans as cattle dogs. One of the routes the Roman army traveled took them through the town of Rottweil. There, the dogs the Romans brought with them were crossed with other dogs and the rest is history.

By the end of the 1800s, the breed was virtually extinct. It made a nice comeback in the early 1900s and today the Rottweiler is one of the most popular breeds in the world.

This is an all-purpose dog that has been used in military and police duty, as a guard, cattle drover and a companion.

This is a large and powerful dog.

It has a large and muscular body with a deep chest, a broad head with a short and broad muzzle, a black nose and small drop ears. The eyes are dark and almond shaped. The tail is usually docked.

It has a short and smooth coat that is black with mahogany or rust markings.

This is an intelligent, courageous and hard working dog.

It's affectionate with its family and those it knows well but wary with strangers. It's courageous and a fierce fighter, seemingly immune to pain, and will fight to protect its family.

The Rottie has very strong guarding, herding and prey instincts and requires puppy socialization training while he is still young.

With proper leadership and training, he will accept other family pets and be a very good and loyal companion.

Rottweilers require experienced dog owners.

When handling them, establish a pack order, with you being the pack leader and other members of your family being right behind you.

Dogs that know their order in the pack are easier to handle and get into trouble less often.

Some Rottweiler breeders will interview prospective owners to make sure this is the right breed for them.

With enough exercise, this breed can adjust to an apartment lifestyle.

If you have a fenced yard or can take him to a safe area, your pet will enjoy running off leash.

If your yard is not fenced, consider getting an electronic dog fence. There are a lot of systems that are cheap, easy to install, and will prevent your pet from escaping an unfenced yard.

If you are into jogging or bicycle riding, take your pet along (on-leash).

At a minimum, take your pet for several brisk walks every day.

These dogs are average shedders.

Brush once or twice a week with a firm bristle brush. Bathe only when absolutely necessary.

Like all dog breeds, the Rottweiler is susceptible to complications caused by parasites such as dog ticks, fleas, and puppy worms, including tapeworms, roundworms, and heartworms.

Feed your pet several smaller meals instead of one large one to keep his weight under control.

The breed, also known as a Yellow Retriever, was developed in the Scottish Highlands from a cross of wavy-coated retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniels (now extinct) and the Irish Setter.

The breed was developed in the late 19th century by Lord Tweedmouth who wanted to create a retriever best suited to the Scottish climate and terrain.

Originally bred as a retriever, it's also used in search and rescue, hunting, as a guide dog for the blind and a therapy dog. And, of course, it's also very popular as a companion dog.

This is a medium to large-size dog. It has a muscular body with a broad head, black or brown nose, brown eyes and drop ears.

The double coat consists of a short and dense undercoat and a thick outer coat. The outer coat can be straight of wavy and comes in various shades of gold.

The coat is shortest at the head and front of the legs. There is some feathering around the neck, at the back of the legs, chest and tail.

The Golden Retriever is an intelligent, playful, outgoing and even-tempered dog. It's very friendly and gets along well with other pets and children. Its friendliness extends not only to the people it knows but to strangers too.

To make Golden Retrievers feel as a part of the family, include them in your family activities.

They love human company, enjoy pleasing their masters and are easy to train.

These dogs are very athletic and excel at obedience trials and dog agility. They are also excellent swimmers.

This breed will do best with an active owner in a suburban environment.

Some Golden Retriever breeders will interview prospective owners to make sure this is the right breed for them.

The Golden Retriever is a moderately active dog.

Provide him with plenty of exercise, including running off leash in a safe place.

If your yard is not fenced, consider getting an electronic dog fence. There are a lot of systems that are cheap (a lot cheaper than a physical fence), easy to install and will keep your pet well protected.

If you are into jogging or bicycle riding, this is your chance to get some exercise together, but make sure your pet is on leash.

Another activity you may try is playing fetch. This breed loves retrieving things and can get a good workout from it.

At a minimum, take him for one or two long walks every day.

The breed is an average shedder. Comb and brush regularly with a firm brush. Pay attention to the dense undercoat.

Bathe only when necessary.

Like all dog breeds, the Golden Retriever is susceptible to complications caused by parasites such as dog ticks, fleas, and puppy worms, including tapeworms, roundworms, and heartworms.

Additional health concerns include hip dysplasia, PRA, cancer, cataracts, skin allergies, heart disease, and excessive weight gain. Do not over feed your pet and provide plenty of exercise to keep the weight in check.

Someone asked me about the differences between cheap, no name and premium brands of dog food. You can find complete answer in dog health questions, but here is the main difference:

Cheap dog foods use low quality protein sources with lots of preservatives. Some dogs can't easily digest them. Because of that, the food just goes through their system with only small amount of nutrients being absorbed.To get the same amount of nutrients from a cheaper brand as from a premium dog food, your dog will need to eat more (and you will spend more).

No discussion on puppy care would be complete without mentioning ticks and fleas.

We all know that ticks are dangerous, but did you know that a single tick byte can cause death of your pet?

Fleas are not as dangerous as ticks, but they can still cause great discomfort to your pet.

Believe it or not but dental disease is one of the most common health disorders in dogs. Bad breath, tooth loss and gum disease are all signs of poor dental health. Fortunately, it's very simple to keep your dog's teeth healthy.
