Perfect Puppy Potty Training

A puppy is the perfect, love-able addition to your home. There's a lot of work involved, certainly, but that cute little thing is more than worth it. One of the first things new owners both need and want to concentrate on is potty training, with good reason- saving your floors and your nose. Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a big yard, your puppy will need to be properly potty trained. Here are several things get you (and your puppy) started:

You'll need a puppy crate to keep it in for those times you're away (at work, for example) if you live in an apartment or a house without a yard.
You've got several choices in puppy potty training: will your dog only go in the yard, go out with you each time, or use a litter box? Yep, I said litter box. Many owners are opting for this if they live in an apartment.
Never, but never punish your dog for messes in the house. What you should do is tell the dog a strong "No."
Keep your puppy in an area of the house that's easy to clean, like tile or linoleum, while you're doing the training.
Make a schedule for you both- once in the morning and in the evening, and after each meal.
When walking your dog, give it peace and let it choose its 'place.' It is a private matter, after all. Be sure to praise your puppy when it's successful.
There are bound to be some mistakes, either when you're away or catching the puppy halfway through the act. Don't get angry at the puppy, but at the mess. And it's really important to deodorize the area, or the puppy will continue using the same area.
